As family jewelers, consulting is an integral part of our job. In addition to finding the perfect gold jewelry for the specific customer, our mission is to advise you how to take care of your jewelry.
Gold is a soft metal. This makes it particularly vulnerable to scratches and chemical damage. However, if you take good care of your gold jewelry, it can be passed down from generation to generation.
The enemies of your gold jewelry
One of the biggest enemies of gold jewelry is chlorine. Frequent contact with this element weakens the metal. On one hand, this can damage the surface of your gold jewelry. On the other hand - you can weaken the grip of the inlaid stones and at some point say goodbye to your diamonds, sapphires, rubies, etc.
Be sure to remove all gold jewelry before visiting the pool or spa. The same goes for detergents. Chlorine-based ones, as well as abrasive products that can scratch the surface of the jewelry.
It is recommended to remove the jewelry in the shower / bath. This will avoid the formation of a darkening film that the soap leaves. Put your engagement ring, wedding ring or bracelet back only after you have completed all procedures, including cosmetics. Beauty products and perfumes also damage the metal.
Storage of gold jewelry
All jewelry, not just gold, should be stored in a dry place, out of direct sunlight. Given the relatively soft structure of gold, it is good to store your gold jewelry separately, in upholstered boxes or soft bags.
Be especially careful if the jewelry you own is inlaid with diamonds, rubies, sapphires or other hard stones. You can store each of your gold jewelry wrapped in soft glasses, for example. This will avoid scratches and damage.
Cleaning gold jewelry
It is traditionally good to give your gold jewelry for professional cleaning at least once a year. It is especially important to trust a jeweler for the maintenance of designer gold jewelry, jewelry with diamonds or with fine and detailed workmanship. During this regular cleaning, the jeweler can also find possible damage to the stones, their grip, on the metal surface.
However, you can also clean your gold jewelry at home. You need lukewarm water and a mild dishwashing detergent. The ratio of the solution is 10: 2 water and faith. Soak the jewelry and let it soak for between 15 minutes and 3 hours, depending on the dirt. Then rinse with lukewarm water and wipe gently with a towel. Do not use napkins or handkerchiefs.
This procedure is suitable for gold jewelry such as wedding rings and engagement rings, which are worn daily. Even if you keep them out of contact with detergents and cosmetics, your contact with such products will certainly lead to gold contact with them. It is important to note, however, that such homemade recipes are used only when necessary, if your jewelry is visibly soiled.
ATTENTION! Do not clean gold jewelry at home if you notice a loose grip on the stones. Do not use a toothbrush, baking soda or detergent when cleaning. Do not clean jewelry at home more than 2-3 times a year.
